V roku 2008 prišlo v Španielsku o prácu milión ľudí, pretože praskla úverová bublina kvôli euru. Nezamestnanosť dosahovala 18, 1 %.
Európska centrálna banka sa stala po ukončení platnosti národných mien v rámci Európskej menovej únie výsadným emitentom peňazí.
