Hospodárska kríza v tridsiatych rokoch 20. storočia spôsobila stagnáciu svetového obchodu, pokles výroby a priniesla so sebou hromadnú nezamestnanosť. Východisko z tejto nepriaznivej situácie priniesol ekonóm menom John Maynard Keynes a bol aj zakladateľom neoklasickej ekonomickej teórie.
Keynes zdôvodňoval nevyhnutnosť štátnych zásahov do trhovej ekonomiky. Bol autorom diela Všeobecná teória zamestnanosti, úroku a peňazí.
Teória efektívneho dopytu
Vypracoval teóriu efektívneho dopytu. V období hospodárskeho poklesu to znamená podporovať dopyt zákazníka znížením daní a vytvoriť pracovné príležitosti prostredníctvom programu verejných prác, ktoré sa financujú zo štátnej pôžičky.
V následnom rozkvete by sa dopyt mal vyvážiť a inflácii by sa zabránilo zvýšením daní a rozpočtový zisk by sa použil na vyplatené pôžičky.
Podľa Keynesa je najdôležitejšie aby bol dostatok peňazí v hospodárstve. Preto treba ľudí viesť k tomu, aby peniaze namieste ukladania a hromadenia míňali alebo investovali.
Mezdi ďalších ekonomických zakladateľov môžeme zaradiť aj meno Karl Marx.
