Ekonómia ešte stále nebola samostatnou vednou disciplínou a bola iba podriadenou časťou politických, filozofických, právnických a iných vedných disciplín. Až v 18. storočí začali niektorý filozofi uvažovať o ekonómii ako o samostatnom systéme myšlienok. Ako prvý sa ekonómami nazvali francúzsky filozofovia a boli to práve predstavitelia fyziokratizmu pod vedením Francoisa Quesnaya.
Je to smer politickej ekonómie, ktorý založili François Quesnay a Anne Turgot (minister financií za Ľudovíta XVI.) v druhej polovici 18. storočia.
Fyziokratizmus považoval pôdu a poľnohospodárstvo za jediný zdroj bohatstva, propagoval hospodársky liberalizmus a slobodu obchodu.
Základom fyziokratizmu je práve Quesnayove dielo z roku 1758 nazvané “Ekonomická tabuľka“ (Tableau économique). Quesnay vo svojom diele hovorí, že prameňom bohatstva je pôda, a preto sú výnosnými zamestnaniami iba poľnohospodárstvo, bohatstvo, rybárstvo a baníctvo. Ďalej tvrdí, že remeselná výroba nevytvára bohatstvo, ale iba pretvára alebo rozdeľuje výrobky svojej výrobnej skupiny. Fyziokrati sa tiež začali zaoberať aj otázkami ako bola sloboda človeka či jeho právo na súkromné vlastníctvo.
Quesnay rozdelil obyvateľstvo na tri skupiny a to:
1.Vlastníci pôdy
2.Produktívna trieda – ľudia pracujúci na pôde
3.Sterilná trieda – ľudia pracujúci v iných odvetviach než poľnohospodárstvo
